Dr. Atkins is a board certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist and previously practiced as a Pediatrician. With over 25 years experience, he is skilled at working with clients from ages 5 through 65 and is an expert in working with adolescents and young adults. In addition to medication management, Dr. Atkins also provides individual psychotherapy.
Dr. Atkins takes an empathetic and non-judgmental approach to psychiatry which builds a connection with clients that is based in collaboration and compassion. He uses psychotherapy, insight-oriented work, mindfulness, life-style changes, and medication to create an integrative treatment plan for each client. Dr. Atkins specializes in depression, bipolar illness, ADHD, anxiety, eating disorders, and trauma.
Dr. Atkins received his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School Inteflex Program. He did a pediatrics residency at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, CA. He then worked for a decade in pediatric primary care for all children, and specialty care for adolescents. After following his interests and recognizing the large need for more Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, Dr. Atkins decided to pursue further training in psychiatry. He completed a residency in adult psychiatry, and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Since that time, Dr. Atkins has operated his own private practice, co-founded Grove Emotional Health Collaborative, and worked part time for Washtenaw County Community Mental Health.
